There are very clear guidelines that should be followed when you want to teach parrot to talk. The first and most basic step is that you should make very proper selection of the bird for training. It should be a bird from parrot species that are known to be quick learners.
The yellow headed Amazon species are preferred by most trainers. There are also some other parrot species that are highly preferred by some trainers for example the cockatoos and the macaws.
For the parrot to understand and be able to mimic or respond, you have to begin from the most simple to the difficult. Do not begin with the complex words. You can even begin by producing certain sounds like whistle. The parrot will begin mimicking the whistle. If it is capable of mimicking all the sounds correctly, you can then begin training it on the response to some simple words.
You should begin the training when the parrot is still very young. If you begin the training when the parrot is already grown up it may have difficulties mimicking or responding. You should ensure that you select those words with very few vocabularies.
The African Gray is in commonly referred to as the fastest learner. It is likely to learn how to mimic and respond faster before the other parrots can do so.
There are three main methods that you can apply in the training:
AUDIO RECORDING:
This is an audio tape for example CD that you purchase. It has some few words and sentences that are played and played very often. This is the simplest way of training because you just need to place the CD players near the parrot cage. The greatest shortcoming of this form of training is that the bird is not likely to understand and learn quickly.
PARROT – PARROT TRAINING:
This involves placing the parrot in the same cage with other parrots that are already trained on how to talk.
MODELLING:
This is the training in which you take the mantle of teaching the parrot how to do it. It is tedious but it is the best form of training.
